The Clerk of the Board of Elections is appointed by board members, with approval and consent of the Board of Hudson County Commissioners.  The Board of Elections is a bipartisan entity, responsible for the oversight and ballot processing of Hudson County elections. It is comprised of 6 commissioners appointed by the Governor who serve staggering two-year terms. There are three Republican Commissioners and three Democratic Commissioners, as mandated by Title 19. The Clerk of the Board, may appoint additional office employees, subject to approval by the Commissioners of Hudson County.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Board of Elections is responsible for recruiting, appointing, and training a sufficient number of poll workers for each election district in the County of Hudson. The Board is also responsible for supervising poll workers during all elections.

This office receives all poll worker applications, acts on same, and issues district assignments to poll workers.

  • In addition, the Board of Elections is responsible for inspecting/selecting, certifying all polling locations within the County of Hudson. 

The Board is responsible for maintaining compliance with the American Disabilities Act.

Candidates running for elected office in the County of Hudson, are entitled to have challengers in each polling location.  Those wishing to do so must submit challenger names/lists to the Board of Elections. In turn, the Board verifies eligibility of submitted names to serve as challengers and issues challenger badges and credentials for election day.

  • The Hudson County Board of Elections receives, validates and tallies all Paper Ballots – Vote by Mail Ballots including Military & Overseas, as well as Provisional Ballots. 

In the case of a recount, the Board of Elections oversees this process. The Board of Elections also conducts the post-election audit, per NJSA Title 19.

  • The Hudson County Board of Elections handles redistricting Election Districts, when appropriate.

The Board is responsible for filing maps & the legal boundary descriptions of the election districts with the Secretary of State.
